About Russell 2000 Index
Russell 2000 (CME: RUT) is best used as an indicator for small and mid-cap US companies. It includes issuers, regardless of the industry, so the index reflects the situation in the US stock market as a whole.Russell 2000 index futures are traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) from Monday to Saturday.
The Russell 2000 calculation was started by the Frank Russell Company in 1984. By that time, the more global Russell 3000 index already existed, and the new instrument is its derivative. It is made up of the bottom 2/3 of the Russell 3000 companies, if we compare the capitalization, it turns out that the "junior" index corresponds to about 10% of the Russell 3000 capitalization.
The developers of the index stated that the Russell 2000 remains perhaps the only index that adequately reflects the potential of US small-cap companies. According to their research, as of December 31, 2017, the index was used as the basis for 93% of investment products targeted at small cap companies. In 84% of cases, it was used as a benchmark, that is, the index basket was copied in ETFs and other investment products.
The value of the Russell 2000 index to a greater extent depends not on the capitalization of companies from the basket, but on the price of shares and their number in circulation (the number that can be bought on the exchange). This distinguishes Russell 2000 from other indexes.
The index is calculated as the sum of the prices of securities included in it, weighted by the Free-Float indicator.
