eBay Stock

The eBay company is primarily associated with the world's largest online auction. In the second half of the 2010s, eBay moved away from the concept of developing only an auction, focusing on marketplaces. Despite fierce competition with Amazon and other major players, eBay stocks are growing, making them a good investment tool.

eBay stocks are traded on NASDAQ under the ticker EBAY. The exchange opens at 09:30 and closes at 16:00 (GMT-04:00 in summer and GMT-05:00 in winter). During the IPO, 3.5 million shares were sold at the upper limit of the price range, which brought in $63 million. The company's capitalization exceeded $1.0 billion. Since the start of trading on the stock exchange, the share price has grown by hundreds of percent. The company issued 1.697678 billion stocks, about 700 million securities were sent into free circulation, the rest is owned by eBay. All securities are voting, 1 share gives the right to 1 vote when participating in a meeting of shareholders.

High demand for shares forced eBay to conduct a series of stock splits. The first stock split took place on March 2, 1999, when holders received 3 shares for 1 share, with a corresponding adjustment to their value. Subsequent splits used ratios of 2 to 1 and 2.376 to 1.

The world's first online auction was founded by Pierre Morad Omidyar on September 4, 1995. It was then called AuctionWeb. By the end of that year, thousands of transactions were being made on the platform.

In September 1997, a rebranding took place – instead of AuctionWeb, the name eBay appeared. Pierre Omidyar wanted to choose a name that sounded similar to his company Echo Bay Technology Group, but the corresponding domain was taken. The name was born as a compromise, eBay is an abbreviation of Echo Bay.

In July 1998, the first takeover took place. Jump Inc. was taken over, and their developments were subsequently used to create a p2p trading platform.

The following year, sites in other countries are opened. eBay becomes an international trading platform and begins to operate in 180 countries. That same year, the first force majeure occurs, the site stops working, but Meg Whitman (CEO of the company) and 50 engineers fixed the problem in 20 hours.

In the early 2000s, a marketplace specializing in selling cars opens, launches its own API, and opens an "eBay University." The auction teaches users how to sell effectively.

The online auction subsequently developed rapidly, setting a number of records. For example, in the 3rd quarter of 2001, an airplane was sold via eBay for $4.9 million.

In 2002, eBay acquired the promising payment system PayPal. In the following years, local online auctions were acquired in a number of countries around the world. In 2008, eBay was accused of involvement in the sale of counterfeit goods. This did not affect the reputation of the trading platform. In the same year, the online auction became one of the first companies in the world to introduce an application for the iPhone. The global crisis caused a decrease in the value of eBay Inc. stocks, but the company survived the crisis, and the recovery of the stock price took 2 years.

Despite the emerging problems in developing and scaling the business, eBay shares are growing. The 2020 pandemic affected global business, but new conditions have increased the value of the online trading sector. At the moment, the growth of shares continues.
