About DAX 30 Index

One of the most common tools for trading stock indices are futures and options. Contracts for the DAX 30 Index are traded on the European Exchange (Eurex), where they are assigned the ticker FDAX. The futures size corresponds to the value of the online DAX 30 index multiplied by 25 euros.

The minimum price change is 0.5 points or 12.5 euros. Futures trading on the site takes place from 01:00 to 22:00 Central European Time (CET). As with other indices, DAX 30 contracts are settlement contracts.

Between 09:00 and 17:30 CET, the regular DAX value is calculated. Later, in the interval from 17:30 to 20:00 CET, Late-DAX (L-DAX) is calculated using a similar formula.

Another type of futures for the German blue chip index, Mini-DAX Futures, is also traded on the Eurex exchange. Their value is equal to the DAX rate multiplied by 5 euros. Mini-contracts are traded on the site under the code FDXM from 01:00 to 22:00, like standard futures. Such tools allow even traders with a small deposit to trade the index.

Brief overview of the DAX 30 index

DAX 30 was published and became known to the general public on July 1, 1988, but the calculation was carried out already in the early 1980s. Dax was created as an index that tracks the state of Germany's blue chips and replaced the then popular Hardy-Index, Borsen-Zeitung and ASB.

All companies included in the DAX 30 Index basket belong to the so-called Prime Standard segment of the Frankfurt Stock Exchange. Prime Standard is part of the companies that meet more stringent requirements compared to the standard ones.

The total capitalization of the companies that make up the DAX 30 exceeds $1 trillion, the capitalization of these companies is about 80% of the total capitalization of all German companies whose shares are traded on the stock exchange.

Also, the index is divided into 2 subspecies, depending on where dividends are sent. There is DAX TR (Total Return), this version involves the reinvestment of received dividends, and there is DAX PR (Performance), it does not include dividends paid to shareholders. The TR version reflects the theoretical income of the investor, and the PR version directly reflects the growth of the German economy. There is a high correlation between them, but the live DAX TR chart is somewhat different from the DAX PR.

DAX is one of the most liquid indexes in the world. According to Eurex internal statistics, the annual volume of options contracts reaches 20-30 million units, and the volume of futures reaches 30-40 million contracts annually.

Sometimes Dax is used as a leading indicator for the US stock market. The main shares of the DAX basket were also listed on the American trading floors. Trading in Europe starts earlier than in the US, if the DAX starts to fall sharply, most likely the US stock market is waiting for the same.

Deutscher Aktienindex (DAX) volatility is moderate. The change in its value per trading day is on average from 1% to 4%. At the same time, the liquidity of futures for the index is quite high, since it is one of the main European indicators, and futures contracts for it are in the top 5 in terms of popularity among similar instruments. This allows you to conclude short-term transactions with low spreads, however, medium-term trading may become more comfortable in conditions of low volatility.

In the long term and on large timeframes, the DAX 30, like many other major indices of developed countries, is prone to the formation of long-term uptrends, lasting from one to four years, followed by corrections of varying degrees of depth.

Due to the relatively small size of the index basket, the index value can be affected by strong fluctuations in the quotes of individual securities in its composition, as well as changes in certain sectors of the German economy. In addition, DAX 30 depends on the global political situation, the domestic and foreign policies of its state, as well as the general state of its economy.

Composition of the DAX 30 Index

The DAX 30 index includes securities of issuers included in the thirty largest in terms of capitalization and trading volume on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

The selection does not take into account the total capitalization of the company, but only the capitalization of securities in free float. Thus, securities owned by managers and insiders are excluded from the calculations. The index value is determined according to the data of the XETRA trading system. Since 2006, the DAX 30 rate has been calculated every second.

ETF DAX 30

Another popular option for profiting from changes in the index value is investing in stocks of exchange-traded funds that copy their dynamics. There are a large number of ETFs following DAX, such as:
  • iShares Core DAX® UCITS ETF;
  • Xtrackers DAX UCITS ETF 1C;
  • ComStage DAX UCITS ETF;
  • Amundi ETF DAX UCITS ETF DR;
  • Vanguard DAX UCITS ETF Distributing.

Their goal is to obtain a return corresponding to the dynamics of the DAX 30 index, minus the management fee. Even a relatively small amount can be invested in ETFs, which eliminates the need for long-term investors to collect a full-fledged stock portfolio to make money on the DAX.

Deutscher Aktienindex (DAX) is a German blue chip index, one of the most popular indicators not only in Europe, but also in the world. It is the underlying asset of more than 150,000 financial instruments and is characterized by extremely high liquidity.
