About General Motors Company

General Motors stocks have become more interesting for investors after reports of the development and full transition to the production of electric vehicles by 2035. Current trends in the world demonstrate that in the framework of the fight against climate change, the largest corporations will develop areas related to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. In this vein, the strategy of the General Motors company looks especially interesting. Until 2007, she held a leading position in the world in auto sales and was one of the first to innovate in the automotive market.

General Motors, as it stands, was founded in 2009 after bankruptcy and restructuring. The predecessor corporation was created in 1908 by William Durant. General Motors Corporation was formed through the merger of 4 large companies:

  • Olds Motor Vehicle;
  • Pontiac;
  • Cadillac Automobile;
  • Buick Motor.

This decision was made to avoid competition. Over the next 10 years, a number of small companies were acquired, and Chevrolet, Canada's McLaughlin Motor and Dayton Engineering Laboratories entered the concern. Until 1920, civilian cars were produced only 10% of the volume, the rest of the vehicles were exclusively for the military sector.

The active expansion of the company into the markets of other countries began in the 20s and 30s with the acquisition of Vauxhall Motors and Adam Opel. By 1940, GMC occupied 44% of the American market, and during the Second World War, the corporation earned about $ 12 billion from sales of military equipment.

Significant capital gains allowed GM to invest in innovative solutions at the time. Since 1950, new car models have received automatic transmissions, and five years later:

  • improved aerodynamic properties of the vehicle;
  • there were air conditioners, seat belts, as well as power steering and brakes;
  • began to be equipped with an eight-cylinder internal combustion engine;
  • there was a transfer to a 12 V power supply.

At the beginning of the 60s, GM expanded its scope of activities, began to develop banking and insurance areas, produce household appliances, spare parts, locomotives, etc. Due to this, profitability increased.

The 80s became an important stage of development, when the corporation began to actively modernize factories and update the model range of cars. In addition, EDS and Hughes Aircraft were bought.

In the early 90s, the concern suffered losses of about $ 30 billion and lost part of the US market. The management of General Motors took measures to rescue the concern, was laid off up to 90% of the head office staff, closed 24 factories, and also laid off 65,000 employees. The company also sold some minor divisions. Such measures have yielded results and helped to reach positive profits. By the end of the 90s, General Motors acquired shares in FHI and Fiat Auto S.p.A. In the early 00s, the securities of Daewoo Motor Company were bought. This allowed us to enter new markets.

Despite the attempts to maintain the leadership, in the summer of 2009 the top management started filing for bankruptcy. The poor financial situation was attributed to high labor costs, which allowed competitors to offer better terms and increase profits. For example, General Motors Corporation spent about 50% more money paying wages to employees than Japanese automakers.

The governments of the United States and Canada bought part of the shares of the newly created General Motors Company, but already in 2010 GM held an IPO, which became one of the largest in the history of the United States. Thanks to the attraction of investments and a successful development strategy, the company received a large profit for the first time in 6 years, which amounted to more than $ 4.5 billion.

General Motors has decided to enter the market for special construction and garden equipment. To achieve this goal, a controlling stake in the Hesler plant was acquired in 2012.

Since 2017, the company has returned to the production of military vehicles. This area is handled by the GM Defense division. In 2018, unpromising assets were sold, as well as several unprofitable factories.

General Motors Company was able, 10 years after the restructuring, to increase capital and achieve a profit of $ 2,500 per vehicle sold in the United States.
